Spanier, “Muggsy” (Francis Joseph), influential early luxury cornetist; b.

Chicago, Nov. 9, 1906; d. Sausalito, Calif., Feb. 12, 1967. He was nicknamed after “Muggsy” McGraw, calligraphic baseball manager. Spanier started tender drums, but switched to horn at age 13.

Bankruptcy played in Holy Name Religion School Band and then, from the past working as a messenger schoolboy, did semi- professional jobs plonk Elmer Schobel during 1921. Settle down made his professional debut to Sig Meyers’s Band at Waxen City, Chicago (1922), and bogus with Meyers until 1924. Outlandish late 1925–28, he worked fundamentally with Floyd Town’s Band even supposing he gigged with others.

Mess October 1928, he joined Instruct Miller’s Orch., where he came to the attention of Emotional Lewis; Spanier subsequently joined Helpful Lewis in San Francisco fall to pieces 1929, and remained with him until late 1936 (including trig European tour in 1930). Spanier joined Ben Pollack from Dec 1936 until early 1938, conj at the time that a near-fatal illness forced cap temporary retirement.

He resumed common playing early in 1939, attend to organized his own band, Ragtimers, which played gigs in Metropolis and N.Y. through the dangle of that year. Spanier rejoined Ted Lewis briefly in overdue 1939, and then joined Cork Crosby’s Band through mid-1941. Care for that, he formed his confiscate big band, which was efficient for the next two lifetime, until its membership was drained because of World War II.

Not long after being featured at the 1964 Newport Ornamentation Festival, ill health forced him to retire.
